...Apparently we don't have 'English as a Second Language' classes here, either....
Not quite, but instruction in English is possible:
QUOTE
...Québec?s education system is one of the most modern in the industrialized world, thanks to a network of quality schools.
French is the first language of over 80 percent of the population of Québec. The proportion of Quebeckers who say they know some French is even higher, at 90 percent. In addition to being the language of everyday life in most regions of Québec, French is the language of instruction.
In 1977, Québec?s National Assembly adopted the Charter of the French Language (Bill 101), which states that all children must be educated in French until the end of their secondary studies, whether in a public school or a subsidized private school. It should be noted that the Charter of the French Language does not apply to Québec?s colleges and universities or non-subsidized private institutions.
For those students who are not fluent in French, the ministère de l?Éducation du Québec (MEQ) offers a variety of language learning support measures in cooperation with the school boards, which dispense preschool, elementary school and secondary school education.
The Charter of the French Language does provide for certain special cases where children are allowed to pursue their studies in English at public or subsidized private schools.
This document briefly describes:
the main categories of children who are eligible for instruction in English at public schools or subsidized private schools;
the steps involved in having a child declared eligible for instruction in English.
The information provided in this document in no way replaces the provisions of the laws and regulations which apply to the right to receive instruction in English; they give only the full and exact scope of the eligibility criteria to be met with respect to the language of instruction...
